Chengdu Itinerary: The Perfect 3 Days (by a Local)

Short version: Three days is the sweet spot for Chengdu. Day 1 — pandas, old streets, hotpot. Day 2 — a day trip to the Leshan Giant Buddha (and optionally Mount Emei or Dujiangyan). Day 3 — slow local Chengdu: teahouses, markets, a cooking class. Here’s the full plan.

Day 1 — The Chengdu highlights

The classic first day, and it works:

• Morning: the giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base — go at 7:30am opening.
• Midday: Kuanzhai Alley or Jinli old streets for lunch and a wander.
• Afternoon: a traditional teahouse in People’s Park.
• Evening: Sichuan hotpot where the locals eat.

Day 2 — Leshan Giant Buddha day trip

Take the high-speed train (about an hour) to Leshan, home of the 71-metre Leshan Giant Buddha carved into a cliff above three rivers — the largest stone Buddha in the world. It’s a half-to-full-day trip; pair it with Mount Emei if you’re an early riser, or keep it relaxed.

• A morning wet market or a backstreet breakfast (wontons, soy milk, guo kui).
• A Sichuan cooking class — learn mapo tofu or kung pao from scratch.
• Real Sichuan opera with face-changing (变脸) — the teahouse version, not the tour-bus show.
• One last hotpot, or skewers (串串) if you want hotpot’s casual cousin.
