Short version: To see the giant pandas in Chengdu, go to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and arrive right at opening (7:30am, MarâOct). Pandas are active and feeding from about 7:30â10am, then they nap. Go early, go in the cooler months, and youâll have a magical visit instead of a hot, crowded one.
Which panda base?
- Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding â the main, easiest option, in the north of the city. Lots of pandas (including cubs), well set up for visitors. This is where to go.
- Dujiangyan Panda Base â ~1.5 hours out, quieter, with a famous volunteer âkeeperâ program. â ïž Important: it is closed for renovation from 23 April 2026, reopening to be announced â so for 2026, plan on the Chengdu base.
- Wolong â further afield, best if you specifically want the volunteer program.
The best time to see active pandas
This is the whole game:
- Time of day: be at the gate for 7:30am opening. Feeding and play happen 7:30â10am. By midday pandas sleep and the crowds peak.
- Season: October to March. Pandas are far more active outdoors in cool weather; summer afternoons, they flop and sleep indoors.
- Crowds: Chengduâs celebrity panda Hua Hua (è±è±) draws long queues â if you want to see her, get there at opening, not after.
Opening hours (2026)
- MarchâOctober: 7:30amâ6:00pm (last entry around 5:00pm).
- NovemberâFebruary: 8:00amâ5:30pm (last entry around 4:30pm).
Hours can change â check the official base site before you go.
How to get there
- Metro + short ride: take the metro toward the base in the north of the city, then a quick taxi/Didi for the last stretch.
- Taxi/Didi: simplest, especially early morning when you want to beat the crowds. Set up mobile payment first.
đŒ Going early is so worth it that many visitors pre-book entry + an early transfer to be sure theyâre there at 7:30. (Booking link to be added â we only suggest ones weâd use.)
A few local tips
- Donât pay anyone for âpanda holdingâ photos â direct public contact is not permitted; legitimate close contact is only through official volunteer programs.
- Go straight to the cubs / nursery first while theyâre active.
- Weekdays beat weekends; avoid Chinese public holidays entirely if you can.
