Mobile Payment in China for Foreigners (2026)

Short version: China runs on the phone. You can pay for almost everything — street food, taxis, the metro, hotels, train tickets — by linking your foreign Visa or Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay. No Chinese bank account and no local SIM required. Set it up before you fly.

The one thing to get right

Download and set up your payment app at home, before you arrive. Verification needs your passport and a face scan, and it’s far less stressful on your own WiFi than standing jet-lagged in an arrivals hall.

Which app?

• Alipay — start here. Better English interface and the highest acceptance for international cards. For most travelers, this alone covers everything.
• WeChat Pay — keep as backup. Some small merchants and mini-programs still lean on WeChat. Nice to have, not essential on day one.

How to set it up (Alipay)

1. Download Alipay from your app store.
2. Register with your phone number (your home number is fine).
3. Open the card section and add a foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB or Diners card.
4. Complete passport verification + facial recognition.
5. Done — scan-to-pay or show-your-code anywhere you see the logo.

Good to know

• Limits (early 2026): single transactions up to roughly ¥35,000 (~$5,000), with a large annual cap — far beyond normal travel spending.
• A small fee may apply on foreign-card transactions above a low threshold; tiny purchases are typically free.
• Acceptance is near-universal in Chengdu — taxis, hole-in-the-wall noodle shops, temples, the lot.

💳 Cash is genuinely hard to use now — many vendors can’t make change. You don’t need it, but a few small notes as a backstop never hurt.
