Getting Online in China: eSIM & VPN (2026)

Short version: Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and more are blocked behind China’s firewall. The simplest fix isn’t a VPN — it’s an international travel eSIM, which routes your data through servers outside China, so your usual apps just work. Buy and install it before you fly.

Why an eSIM is the easy answer

A travel eSIM connects you as a roaming foreign user. Your traffic exits China before it hits the firewall, so Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram all work normally — no VPN needed. For most visitors, that’s the whole solution.

The critical rule

Order and install your eSIM before your flight. Non-Chinese eSIMs generally cannot be installed once you’re already inside mainland China. Do it at home. No exceptions.

What to get

Any reputable international travel eSIM works. Look for one that explicitly says it works in mainland China without a VPN:

• Good for a single-city / short trip: a small fixed-data plan (≈1 GB for a few days) is plenty for maps, messaging and browsing — often just a few dollars.
• Good for moving between cities or onward travel: a larger multi-country plan.

Keep a VPN as backup

The eSIM handles your phone. Still install a reputable VPN before you arrive as a backup — useful for laptop work and for hotel WiFi, which routes through the local network and is behind the firewall. VPN apps are hard to download once you’re inside China, so get it before departure.
